let's begin with nbc 10's george spencer on that scene. george? >> reporter: we can tell you the scene is still incredibly active as police work this shooting investigation. when we got out of our live trucks, we could see the police helicopters flying low across this neighborhood. i am at 52nd and master and it appears that the shooting scene, at least the heart of this investigation, is at least a full block east of where i'm standing probably near 51st and master. take a look at some of the video that our cameras captured an even busier scene captured just about 30 minutes ago. our cameraman saw s.w.a.t. teams arriving here. based on what we know so far, seems that the officer had some sort of confrontation with the suspect in this area around 51st and master. that officer ended up we're being told w a gunshot wound to his thigh. we're hearing that the suspect or possibly multiple suspects then fled that immediate area.
but was aeas we showed you at the beginning of this newscast sky 4 captured at least one person being taken into custody in this immediate area. from what we're learning right now, it's not clear if that is a suspect in the shooting if it is someone else who's otherwise connected to this case. we are still awaiting an official briefing from officers out here on the scene. obviously they have a lot to work on as they put together the pieces of this shooting investigation. the heart of what we're being told now, though, is the officer who was injured suffered a gunshot wound to his thigh. we are still working the scene. and we'll bring you new updates as soon as we get them. that's the latest. george spencer, nbc 10 news. >> our team coverage continues at 10 presbyterian hospital where the officer was taken tonight. >> randy gyllenhaal picks up our coverage from there. >> reporter: there's a large contingent of police officers here many of them blocking off
the entrance to the e.r. here at the hospital. the officer was taken to the emergency room, a few feet behind me here. we have seen dozens of officers rushing inside to be by this officer's side. sources are telling us the officer is stable inside the e.r. again, shot in the thigh. let me show you some video here of the large contingent of police officers from multiple jurisdictions out here at the hospital. now, the scene of the shooting is only about two miles from the hospital. we're told the officer was rushed here very quickly. is currently inside getting treated. back here live at the hospital we're waiting for any kind of update from philadelphia police. there's a large contingent of them here. we're trying to get more information on both this officer's condition and what led up to this shooting. randy gyllenhaal nbc 10 news. >> background here tonight's shooting came weeks after a philadelphia police officer was killed on the job. sergeant robert wilson iii, you

jersey under a freeze watch for tomorrow night. so this area expected to be seeing temperatures below freezing so it will be more widespread come tomorrow night. 40 degrees for allenton reading and pottstown. poconos at 32 degrees. look at the future temperatures. tomorrow mornings by the time you walk outside, many areas will be in the 30s. so a very cold start to your friday. staying windy and well below normal for this time of the year. through the weekend, i'll show you the forecast how cold it will get and also our next chance of rain. a man dies inside his south philadelphia home. a small fire had consumed his upstairs bedroom. fire crews were able to knock it down almost immediately. but they found the victim's body amid the smoke. joe derosa was a fixture in his neighborhood. he spent much time with friends
at a neighborhood social club. they gathered there tonight to remember him. the philadelphia mother accused of abandoning her disabled son in a park will face a judge tonight. she will be arraigned later tonight. a passerby found the man abandoned on november 10th. he was left with just a bible and a blanket. police say she ditched her son to be with her boyfriend in maryland. she was extradited to philadelphia this morning. tonight, a family friend is facing charges after a first-grader took heroin to school in north philadelphia. officers say they arrested latoria faulk after finding 14 baggies of the drug in her car. officials police she was the original source of the drug that the student took to school. she took some of the drug into her friend's home where the
first-grader got ahold of it and took it to school and showed it to friends in the lunchroom. the child's mother has not been charged. an autopsy tomorrow should provide some answers about a fetus found at a camden recycling center. the body was found on a conveyor belt on mt. ephraim avenue. detectives could not determine the gender. a water main break in south philadelphia left dozens of homes without water tonight. sky 4 was over tenth street. you see the water spewing out of the pipe. we're told water service has now been turned back in the area. new at 11:00, one of philadelphia's most notorious mobsters is a free man tonight. joey merlino is out of a florida prison thanks to a new court ruling. merlino's been behind bars since january. prosecutors say he violated
parole by secretly meeting with other mobsters. today an appeals court reversed that ruling and ordered merlino to be released immediately. president barack obama is apologizing to the families of two hostages killed by u.s. drone strikes in pakistan. today the president said the target was an al qaeda compound. intelligence officials thought no civilians were there. american aid worker warren weinstein and giovanni laporto of italy were killed in january. al qaeda had been holding both for several years. >> i profoundly regret what happened. on behalf of the united states government, i offer our deepest apologies to the families. >> two other americans who had leadership roles with the terror network were also killed. here at home now, the candidates for philadelphia mayor are keeping busy on the debate trail. tonight five of the six democratic candidates answered questions from parents in west philadelphia.
the parents group asked questions about education at the global leadership academy. earlier today, the candidates debated at st. joseph's university, one of the quick-fire questions was about legalizing marijuana. listen. >> state issue only. >> i want some, yes. >> well the most recent poll shows it's a tight three-way race between jim kinney anthony hardy williams and lynn. melissa murray bailey is the only republican running for mayor. registered democrats outnumber republicans by a 7-to-1 ratio in philadelphia. you'll soon have to pay for grocery store shopping bags in philadelphia if one local lawmaker gets his way. the city councilman introduced a measure to instruct stores to charge a nickel for every grocery bag and says the money would be split between the store and the city to help control litter.
the fee would not apply to reusable bags you take with you. the next step is a public hearing on the proposal. tonight, family friends and community leaders gather to honor a man who was badly beaten at a gas station more than two weeks ago. robert barnes' relatives say doctors don't believe barnes will ever wake up and will likely remain in a permanent vegetative state. police arrested three people in connection with the incident. tonight barnes' sister said she hopes the people responsible will pay for what they did. >> now i won't ever have the opportunity to look him in the eyes again and tell him i love him because these people decided the right thing to do was to beat my brother. >> police say there could be more arrests. copper thefts land two south jersey men in jail. ezra evans and jared mcclurg of pennsville are facing burglary, theft and criminal mischief charges. police say they would ride
around on bikes, look for vacant homes and break in to steal copper. they're accused of damaging 21 homes. police say they got nearly $10,000 in cash for the copper from camden iron. detectives say that company is not cooperating. america now has its first black female attorney general. this afternoon, the senate confirmed to loretta lynch to the vote. republicans were upset that lynch supported president obama's executive actions limiting deportations for undocumented immigrants. the vote was 56-43 with ten republicans supporting her. a top military commander learned his fate for leaking classified information to his mistress. former cia director david petraeus will not go to prison. instead he was sentenced to two years probation and fined $100,000. he apologized after today's hearing. >> i apologize to those closest to me and to many others
including those with whom i was privileged to serve in government and in the military over the years. >> petraeus had an affair with his biographer, paula broadwell. he gave her classified material while she was working on her book. we continue to follow breaking news involving the shooting of a philadelphia police officer. sky 4 is over the scene in west philadelphia just after 10:00 tonight. the officer was shot in the thigh and sources tell nbc 10 he is in stable condition. our crews are on the scene gathering new information. we'll have a live update in two minutes.

connection with this shooting of an officer here in the west philadelphia area. our cameras captured a pretty busy scene when we first arrived here. we have confirmed that an officer was shot by a suspect injured in the thigh by that gunshot wound. it now seems that the suspect who was involved in this confrontation with the officer fled the immediate scene but was then captured shortly thereafter by philadelphia police. we can tell you the suspect who is now in custody was also injured in all of this apparently also suffering a gunshot wound. we do not know a lot of the specifics in terms of how the confrontation unfolded between the officer and that suspect. but we have confirmed that there has been one arrest on this scene. obviously we're working to get more details on it. we'll bring them to you as soon as we do. that's the latest live in philadelphia. george spencer, nbc 10 news. >> appreciate the update george. new at 11:00, controversy surrounding st. joseph university's decision to have
philadelphia mayor michael nutter deliver this year's commencement speech. the cardinal society are upset about his officiating a same-sex marriage earlier this year. a spokesman for st. joseph's tells us mayor nutter is an outstanding choice to address our graduates. he is jesuit educated a neighbor to the campus and his values around education and civil engagement are xemp ri. unlike the card neumann society, saint joseph's university is educationed on a wide range of issues. there are reports that comcast will walk away from its proposed takeover of time warner. cnbc says it could happen as early as tomorrow. this comes just days after several u.s. senators urged the federal communications commission and the u.s. department of justice to block
the merger. they said the deal would lead to higher prices for some cable and internet users and fewer choices. combining the number one and number two u.s. cable companies would have put nearly 30% of tv and more than half of broadband subscribers under one roof. comcast is based in philadelphia and is one of the largest employers in the city. it is also the parent company of nbc 10. from our jersey shore bureau power could begin flowing to the revel casino as early tomorrow. the new owners made a deal to turn the power back on for at least two weeks. power was shut off earlier this month over a fee dispute. they've been fined $5,000 a day because there's no power to run fire safety systems. this beach house is set to go on the auction block next month.
bidding is expected to start at just $100. teresa and joe giudice bought it in 2005 for $347,000. neighbors hope someone gets a good deal. >> we hope nice people come in and enjoy it like everybody down here enjoys the shore. >> teresa giudice began serving a 15-month prison sentence in january after she and her husband pleaded guilty to federal bankruptcy fraud and conspiracy charges last year. the shore house was flooded by sandy, then renovated. philadelphia's bike share program is finally on the road. mayor nutter launched the indigo system today. the program has 600 bikes in 70 docking stations that operate 24 hours a day. users will be able to get a bike at any station and return it to any other station by using a member card or a credit or debit card.
definitely a chilly breezy day today. and tonight we're going to drop down to freezing for some areas. freezing temperatures in the forecast. most of these hitting around sunrise tomorrow. so you want to cover any sensitive spring plants that have already started blooming. this type of weather will damage them. cool and windy tomorrow. even across the weekend. right now, at 32 degrees in the poconos. 40, lehigh valley. 43 bensalem. 41, wilmington. much of south jersey and delaware in the low 40s. these numbers will keep dropping throughout the night. because of that we have a freeze watch and freeze warning out for the area. the warning is the more imminent one, that is for tonight. that includes the lehigh valley upper bucks, montgomery and chester counties until 9:00 tomorrow morning. subfreezing temperatures will be occurring there. and that same area combined with many of the counties in new jersey under a freeze watch with freezing temperatures expected
tomorrow night into saturday morning. so the freeze is just going to expand as we go into the weekend. it is going to stay pretty cold and pretty unseasonably cold as we go across the next several days. future weather here overnight, we stay dry. but that's also going to give us that chance to get even colder. windy and chilly through tomorrow afternoon. but we stay dry. then saturday morning, colder temperatures than what we'll see tomorrow morning. cold start to your weekend. saturday afternoon, 6:00 p.m. increasing clouds but rain should remain down to our south and southwest. we'll be watching it to see how far north it might move. right on the northern edge. same thing from sunday. most of the rain will stay to the south. there's the chance it could move farther north. we'll be watching for rain in the forecast over part of your weekend for part of the area. lows will be in the 30s tonight. 32, doylestown. 31 in reading. philadelphia, mid-30s overnight tonight. 33 for chester.
32 degrees, westchester. closer to the shore, 40 degrees in some spots. unseasonably cold as we go through tonight, tomorrow. still unseasonably cold through the afternoon. 51 to 54 degrees. winds gusting at 34 miles an hour. and the winds will stay with us over the weekend. for saturday cold start. 34 for the morning low. high temperature around 60 degrees. same thing as we go into sunday. we'll be watching that chance for rain. and we stay below average starting next week. do the eagles want to trade up for marcus mariota? and the marlins made quick work of the phillies today. how quick? that's next.

we have more now on our breaking news. police just updated us on the condition of a philadelphia police officer. the officer shot in west philadelphia tonight near 51st and master. he's a bike patrol officer and police are telling us he's going to be okay. he's at 10 presbyterian hospital with a wound to his right arm not his thigh as earlier reported. >> one person is in custody. that person has been taken to the university hospital. that person has a gunshot wound.
